Seven people were arrested in Belgium on Monday, following the seizure of 4.18 tonnes of cocaine last week in Rotterdam, the largest amount found in 2021 in this port in the south of the Netherlands, the Dutch prosecutor’s office announced today.
The drugs, valued at 300 million euros, were hidden in a container of bananas, which had arrived from Ecuador and was destined for Antwerp (Belgium).
“4,060 kilos were found in (a load) of bananas, after a thorough investigation. In addition, 120 kilos were found on the roof of the container “, the prosecutor’s authorities explained.
“This is the most important seizure of 2021,” they added. The cocaine was discovered on December 30.
The drugs were destroyed in the Netherlands before reaching Belgium. The Belgian authorities and a Dutch team then followed the container to a warehouse in Essen (Belgium), on the other side of the border.
Belgian police raided on Monday and arrested a total of seven people, five Belgians and two Britons. Six detainees have been taken into custody.
