The official adoption by the United Kingdom and EU of “Windsor Frame” which replaces the Northern Ireland Protocol as part of the Brexit agreement, announced the British Foreign Secretary James Cleverley after a meeting in London with competent Vice-President of the Commission Maros Seftsovics.

The ratification of the new agreement follows the approval by the House of Commons during the week of the “Stormond Brake”, i.e. the provision allowing the British side to reject new Community legislation affecting Northern Ireland, if requested by the local Northern Irish parliament .

This new measure passed with the support of the British opposition, despite a negative vote from Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and 22 Eurosceptic MPs from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party, including his predecessors Liz Truss and Boris Johnson.

The Windsor Framework also allows for control-free trade of products from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, as long as these products are not intended for export to the EU via the Republic of Ireland.

Mr Cleverley said that by formally adopting the new deal the British Government was “delivering on a commitment to provide stability and certainty to Northern Ireland”.

He added that he looked forward to further effective cooperation with the EU on critical issues such as security and energy.
