Public school workers in the Los Angeles area won a 30% pay raise after mass strike action this week, their union announced Friday.

Specifically, school bus drivers, cafeteria workers and teaching assistants working in the Los Angeles school district — the second largest school district in the US after New York — went on strike Tuesday through Thursday to protest ” poverty wages’, leaving more than 500,000 students out of school.

After negotiations, an agreement in principle was announced yesterday, which responds to the demands of the workers, their union pointed out. The agreement remains to be approved by the employees.

According to the same source, the agreement provides for the average annual salary of union members to increase from 25,000 dollars to 33,000 dollars (from 23,200 euros to 27,800 euros).

Los Angeles is one of the most expensive cities in the US, with particularly high prices for taxes, food and basic services such as water and electricity. The average rent in the city is $3.00 a month (€2,787), according to the website Zillow.

Many Americans are being hit by the rising cost of living, with the prices of basic goods and services having skyrocketed over the past 12 months.
