After 12 years in opposition seats in New South Wales, the Labor Party is returning to government in Australia’s most populous state and the new government will have a three-member expatriate group.
According to a publication of the Greek program of Public Radio SBSnew premier in New South Wales emerges as Labor leader Chris Minnsreplacing Philelefthero Dominic Perrottetwhile according to the estimates the Labor Party will form an independent government, even marginally with 47 seats.
In fact, the publication states that the ministry of two expatriate MPs, Steve Camper and Sophia Kotsis and of an expatriate senator, her Courtney Houssos.
In the seat of Rockdale, Sydney, he was re-elected for a 3rd term Steve Camper (Stavros Kamberogiannis). With 63% of the votes counted, Mr. Camper received almost 54% in the main vote and now the addition of second preference votes is procedural. Mr Camper has represented this constituency since 2015 for the Labor Party. As shadow minister he was responsible for Small Business, Property and Multiculturalism. It is estimated that he will now have responsibility for these sectors as a minister. Mr. Camper is one of the closest associates of the newly elected state premier. Chris Minns chose to celebrate his victory in the center in the district of Mr. Kamberogiannis and even mentioned the name of the Greek-Australian politician in his final statements.
The expatriate noted a comfortable re-election in the seat of Canterbury Sophia Kotsis (Sophie Cotsis). With about 50% of the votes counted, Mrs. Kotsi received almost 59% in the primary vote, making the counting of the remaining preferential votes a formal process. shadow minister, i.e. Labor Relations and Work Health and Safety. Mrs. Kotsis (Sophie Cotsis) came down with the Labor Party. He won the seat of Canterbury for the first time in a by-election in November 2016 and retained it in the election in March 2019. “I sincerely thank the Greek community for its support. The new government will implement what it promised and personally from the position of the government I will now do everything possible to build the Canterbury hospital”, Mrs. Kotsi said to the Greek Program of SBS Radio. SBS Greek visited on election night (Saturday night) the Sydney and NSW Mytilene Brotherhood in Canterbury. The expatriate politician who hails from Lesvos, chose the Mytilene house to celebrate her election victory.
The senator Courtney Houssos he topped Labour’s Senate ballot and thus secured a second eight-year term in the ‘Upper House’. Mrs Houssos was first elected in March 2015. She is the wife of George Houssos, also a politician with the Labor Party. In the new government, Mrs. Houssos may take over as Minister of Natural Resources and Better Regulation and Innovation, positions she also had in the “shadow” cabinet.
The member of the Liberal Party is also expected to be present in the new Parliament Eleni Peteinou. It is estimated that he will retain the seat of Miranda even with a narrow margin. With approximately 50% of the votes counted, Mrs. Peteinou was leading with approximately 51%, including second preference votes. In the first vote Mrs. Peteinou received 44.64%. Her percentages are much lower than what she got in the 2019 elections (she got about 54% in the primary vote and 65% with the votes of the remaining preferences.
Mrs. Eleni Marie Petinos, has represented the seat of Miranda since March 2015. In the outgoing government of Dominic Perrottet, she served as Minister of Small Business and Fair Trading from December 2021 to August 2022. She was removed from her position after from complaints of intimidation of employees in her ministry. She categorically denied the accusations.
