A top US diplomat visited China last week, the State Department said on Tuesday, confirming an effort to restart dialogue between Washington and Beijing after US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s trip to the Chinese capital was canceled in early February.

Rick Waters – head of the State Department’s newly created Office of US-China Relations – visited Beijing, Hong Kong and Shanghai last week, US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said, referring to a mere “visit work” during which Waters held talks with Chinese diplomats.

It was the first visit by a US official to China after the cancellation of the planned trip by the US Secretary of State. Blinken’s visit to China was canceled due to the tension in Washington-Beijing relations triggered by the diplomatic incident with the Chinese hot air balloon that entered US airspace.

Meanwhile, as the Bloomberg news agency reports citing informed sources, White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan had a telephone conversation with China’s top diplomat Wang Yi on Friday.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken met with Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in mid-February.
