The president of Ukraine stated today that he would like to lock Vladimir Putin in a basement without a toilet, after the visit he made to a Ukrainian village, which was liberated a year ago. Almost all the inhabitants of this community were locked up by the Russian invaders in the basement of a school.

“All these people were living in complete darkness, waiting for the return of the Ukrainians (soldiers). They wrote (on the walls) the names of those who died and the dates so that they would not be forgotten. And the children wrote the lyrics of the national anthem” said Zelensky, at a ceremony in honor of the residents. The Ukrainian president was accompanied by German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck and Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejsinowicz Burits.
“After seeing this, I wish the Russian president to spend the rest of his life in a basement with a bucket for a toilet,” said Zelensky, in this village, in the Chernihiv region.
Zelenskiy thanked Habek and Burich for attending this ceremony and stressed that it is important for Ukraine’s allies to see this basement in order to decide “whether they’re going to help Ukraine or whether they’re going to keep thinking about how to find a way to talk to Russia.”
After failing to capture Kiev, the Russian military was deployed to northern Ukraine in late March 2022, about a month after the invasion. In the towns and villages he captured there have been many complaints – often substantiated – of summary executions, torture, rape and looting. The Kremlin, as always, denies them.
Valery Polguy, a 38-year-old resident of the Yahidne community who was also imprisoned in the basement, described the horrific conditions of detention. “At first it was cold, but then more and more people gathered and there was not enough oxygen anymore. Old people would pass out from lack of oxygen, go crazy and then die.”he said.
