At least 7 people were killed and 17 injured by strong 7-magnitude earthquake that occurred early yesterdayMonday morning in a remote area in the northwestern part of Papua New Guinea, according to an account released today by local authorities.
The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred shortly after 04:00 local time on Monday (21:00 Sunday Greek time), was in the jungle and 97 kilometers from the coastal town of Wiwak. Its focal depth was 62 kilometers.
The provincial disaster management office said the earthquake killed at least 7 people and injured 17.
Teams from the humanitarian organization Samaritan Aviation airlifted those who were seriously injured, said Samaritan Aviation official Chris Cook.
