Heavy snowfall has been affecting central and northern Serbia since yesterday, Monday, in the evening. The snow has been falling non-stop for 14 hours causing traffic problems while access to settlements located at high altitude is impossible.

There are also problems with electrification in mountain villages. In Belgrade, the height of snow on the ground reached 15 cm, breaking all previous records for the month of April. In central parts of the city, trees fell, injuring passers-by and causing damage to parked vehicles. Two female students were injured by a falling branch and are hospitalized. On a highway near the town of Kragujevac, a bus veered off course due to the slippery surface and fell into a ditch, resulting in minor injuries to eighteen passengers.

Forecasters warn that the extreme weather will last for another two days, when the temperature will gradually start to rise. Authorities are also taking precautionary measures to deal with natural disasters in riverside towns where water levels are expected to rise sharply when the snow melts and there is a risk of flooding.
