A spokesman for the Israeli army blamed the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas for today’s rocket attacks from Lebanon.

The spokesman also said that Israel holds the Lebanese government responsible for the rockets fired from its territory.

“The party that fired the rockets from Lebanon is Hamas in Lebanon,” Avishai Andraee wrote in a message on Twitter.

Earlier today, a Defense official said the Israeli military was still assessing the situation after rockets were fired at its territory from Lebanon but was working on the assumption that Palestinian factions were behind the attacks.

The army said in a statement that 34 rockets were fired this afternoon from Lebanon towards Israel, of which 25 were intercepted by air defenses and at least five fell on Israeli territory.

The site where the rockets landed is “under investigation,” the military adds, clarifying simply that these “statistics are not final.”

Meanwhile, three security sources in Beirut told Reuters that Palestinian factions based in Lebanon — not the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah — were behind today’s rocket attacks.

The powerful armed group Hezbollah controls security in southern Lebanon, where there are several Palestinian refugee camps and armed groups.
