Norwegian soldiers return underwear after service – Covid cuts supplies

by

Norway, which guards NATO’s northern border and shares a border with Russia, calls in about 8,000 young men and women for military service each year and until recently allowed conscripts to leave the barracks in their underwear.

However, the pandemic has severely burdened the flow of supplies with factory closures and transportation problems, prompting the Norwegian military to ask conscripts to deliver underwear, including socks.

Although initially voluntary, it has now become mandatory, the public broadcaster NRK said on Friday.

“Now that we have chosen to reuse this part of the kit, it helps. “We do not have enough stock,” defense spokesman Hans Messingset told NRK.

“Fabrics are washed, cleaned and inspected. “What we are distributing is in good condition,” he said.

A conscript spokesman, however, criticized the recurring shortcomings.

“Serious shortages of equipment and clothing could potentially affect operational readiness and, at worst, the safety of the soldier,” Eirik Sjohelle Eiksund told the Forsvarets Forum.
