A diplomatic delegation of Saudi Arabia arrived today in Tehran to discuss the reopening of the kingdom’s diplomatic missions in the Islamic Republic, the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced.

The visit of the Saudi officials is being held as part of the March 10 “implementation of the tripartite agreement” between the two major countries in the region and China to restore Riyadh-Tehran relations after a seven-year rift, the ministry said, citing the official Saudi news agency SPA.

The heads of diplomacy of Iran and of Saudi ArabiaHossein Amir-Abdollahian and Faisal bin Farhan, met on Thursday in Beijing to implement the normalization of relations between the two Middle East powers after years of high tension.

The two ministers “negotiated and exchanged views emphasizing the official restoration of bilateral relations and the measures to be taken to reopen the embassies and consulates of the two countries,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry announced.

Today, a Saudi “technical delegation” met the head of the Protocol at the headquarters of the Iranian Foreign Ministry, SPA reported.

The Iranian official confirmed his country’s “willingness and willingness to provide all facilities and support to assist the Saudi delegation in its mission.”

The two countries severed relations in 2016 after Saudi diplomatic missions were attacked by protesters in the Islamic Republic following Riyadh’s execution of a Shiite cleric.

Their rapprochement is expected to be officially celebrated on the occasion of Iranian President Ebrahim Raishi’s visit to Riyadh at the invitation of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, a trip scheduled after Ramadan in late April.

The restoration of relations will allow the two countries to reopen their embassies by mid-May and implement economic and security cooperation agreements signed more than 20 years ago.

China on Thursday welcomed “the first official meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries in more than seven years”.

This approach may have an impact on several regional conflicts, notably in Yemen, where the two countries support opposing camps.

Mediators from Oman also arrived in Sanaa today to hold talks with Iran-backed Houthi rebels on a truce in Yemen with Saudi Arabia, which backs the Yemeni government, according to an airport source.
