The United States is “closely monitoring China’s actions,” a State Department spokesman said on the first day yesterday of Beijing’s military exercises around Taiwan.
The United States on Saturday called on China to show restraint on the first day of military exercises around Taiwan, underscoring that Washington is ready to honor its security commitments in Asia.
“Our channels of communication with the People’s Republic of China remain open, and we have always called for restraint and no change to the status quo,” a State Department spokesman said.
“We are confident that we have sufficient resources and capabilities in the region to ensure peace and stability,” the spokesman also said, adding that the United States was “closely monitoring China’s actions.”
Beijing on Saturday conducted a “total encirclement” exercise in the Taiwan Strait on the first day of military exercises that will run until Monday, involving at least nine warships and 71 military aircraft, according to Taiwan’s defense ministry.
The drills are seen as retaliation for the recent meeting in the United States between the Republican speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, and Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen, who denounced China’s “authoritarian expansionism”.
Kevin McCarthy reiterated Saturday in a message on Twitter that “under no circumstances should China tell me where I can go or who I can talk to.”
