An Iranian delegation will arrive in Saudi Arabia by Friday to begin the process of reopening Tehran’s diplomatic missions, a top Iranian diplomat announced today.

The announcement follows the arrival yesterday in Tehran of a diplomatic delegation of Riyadh for the same reason, two days after the historic meeting in Beijing between the foreign ministers of the two countries.

In Beijing on Thursday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan gave assurances that the two sides are committed to continuing the work of rapprochement, less than a month after the surprise Chinese-sponsored deal. for the normalization of their relations.

Sunni Saudi Arabia and Shiite Iran severed diplomatic ties in 2016 after the Saudi diplomatic missions in Tehran and Mashhad were attacked by Islamic Republic protesters and then Riyadh executed a prominent Shiite cleric.

Beijing’s agreement between Riyadh and Tehran will allow the reopening of the two countries’ embassies by mid-May and the implementation of economic and security cooperation agreements signed 20 years ago.

The rapprochement of the two countries will be officially celebrated on the occasion of the visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi to Riyadh at the invitation of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman, after the end of Ramadan at the end of April.
