At four the death toll rose after the explosion that flattened a four-story apartment building in Marseille, specifically in the La Plaine district.

Local authorities said four more were still missing and rescue efforts were ongoing.

The cause remains unclear, but investigators are looking into the possibility of a gas leak.

THE housing minister, Oliver Klein described the discovery of the bodies as “horrific, difficult and dramatic” and told reporters that the government would support the families of the victims.

Also, five people from neighboring buildings were slightly injured by the blast and about 200 people had to be evacuated from their homes. Today, the mayor of Marseille, Benoit Payan, warned that there was still a risk of nearby buildings collapsing.
