Shock in the US Muslim community. An imam in his state New Jersey, USA stabbed during morning prayer.

Sayyed El Naqib, the imam of the Omar Mosque in Paterson, New Jersey, was stabbed by an assailant who was among the crowd of worshipers at the mosque during morning prayers on Sunday.

The Turkish national attacker, Sherif Zorba, 32, was recorded on the mosque’s security camera as he remained standing during prayers, startling worshipers who had fallen to the ground and stabbing the 65-year-old imam with a knife.

He was also seen threatening people who tried to stop him. Believers managed to stop Zorba, and handed him over to the police.

The imam was taken to Saint Joseph Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Among other things, the attacker is charged with attempted murder and illegal possession of a weapon, according to a statement from the local county prosecutor’s office.

Zorba said he is from Istanbul and came to the US not long ago, and communicated with the court through a Turkish translator.

The address of the mosque he did not mention the motives of Zorba in a statement, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
