Panic scenes unfolded on Easter Sunday at a city procession in Vélez-Málaga, Spain. A wooden statue of the Virgin Mary, 1.80m high, caught fire – probably when a candle accidentally touched it.

The robed statue of the Virgin was engulfed in flames and chaos reigned.

The faithful who accompanied the litany began to scream in fear and run to save themselves, while those closest to them began to beat the flames with their hands and the white robes they were wearing.

Two pilgrim brothers suffered burns trying to save the statue, which was 80% destroyed.

Finally, the litany was canceled and the fire was extinguished thanks to the reactions of the members of the fraternity and with the help of a fire extinguisher brought by the local police.

Authorities said that although it has suffered extensive damage, the 1980 statue “can be recovered”.
