EU and NATO member Romania increased its defense spending to 2.5% of GDP this year, up from 2%, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine
Romania aims to buy the latest generation US F-35 fighter jets to boost its air defenses, the country’s supreme defense council (CSAT) said in a statement.
Romania, a member of the EU and NATO, increased its defense spending this year to 2.5% of its GDP, up from 2%, in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The country, which shares a 650km border with Ukraine, is home to a US ballistic missile defense system and, since last year, a permanent coalition combat unit has been stationed on its soil.
“The process of modernizing the Air Force will continue through the acquisition of the latest generation F-35 jets,” the statement said.
The Supreme Defense Council did not give a timetable or the number of aircraft to be bought, which are made by US-based Lockheed Martin Corp.
In March, the Ministry of Defense announced that Romania would buy Abrams tanks manufactured by General Dynamics.
In December, the same ministry had signed an agreement to acquire seven Watchkeeper X drones from the Israeli electronic defense systems company Elbit Systems for 1.89 billion lei (383.2 million euros).
