The until now deputy Director General of the British security service MI5 Ann Kist-Butler eselect as the new Director of GCHQ security intelligence.

She thus becomes the first woman to be given the reins of the specific service, although not the first woman to lead one of the UK’s secret security services.

Mrs. Kist-Butler, mother of threewill become the 17th head of the “Government Communications Headquarters”, as is the full name of GCHQ, succeeding Sir Jeremy Fleming.

The agency’s primary mission is to monitor, analyze and intercept communications relating to UK security, as well as cyber security.

It works with the Secret Security Intelligence Service MI6, MI5, the police and the armed forces, creating the UK’s protection network against domestic and foreign threats.

Announcing the appointment, Foreign Secretary James Cleverley said Ann Kist-Butler had an “impressive track record” of working at the heart of Britain’s national security network.

She said she was delighted with her new role, praised GCHQ’s offer and added that she was looking forward to her duties.
