Estonian Prime Minister Kaya Kalas was yesterday instructed to form the new government and by the parliament in Tallinn on Wednesday, five weeks after the parliamentary elections.
The head of the center-right Reform party and members of her government just need to get the green light from president Alar Karis and be sworn in. The president of the Baltic country had already given her the mandate to form a government.
Mrs Kalas, who took office in 2021, is among the strongest supporters of Ukraine in the European Union. She has been vocal in favor of Western arms deliveries and tough sanctions on Russia, with which her country shares a 300km border, while constantly calling for the so-called eastern wing of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to be strengthened.
Speaking to the Estonian parliament yesterday, she called Estonia’s national security the top priority of her government tomorrow, as “the war changed everything”.
The 45-year-old lawyer, the daughter of Estonia’s former prime minister and ex-commissioner and vice-president Sim Kalas, the first woman ever to become prime minister in the country of 1.3 million people, secured 59 votes out of 101 in parliament. 38 members of the Estonian national delegation voted against it.
Her new government will consist of members of her party, the Estonian Social Democrats and the liberal party Estonia 200. The parties already signed a program agreement on Easter Monday. The alliance has a majority of 60 seats in parliament.
Until now, Mrs. Kalas was the head of an alliance with the Social Democrats and the right-wing party Isama (“Homeland”).
