Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic is optimistic about the outcome of the Djokovic case. “I called the Australian Foreign Minister this morning. There is a positive tone on the Australian side. “I have stated that the Serbian government is ready to provide any guarantees that Novak will be allowed to enter Australia,” Ana Brnabic said in an interview with a private television station. The Serbian prime minister said that gluten-free food, a laptop and data cards were handed over to Djokovic following interventions from Belgrade so that he could communicate with his family. Ana Brnabic also said that the request for Djokovic to stay in a private residence was not accepted and so the Serbian tennis player will remain in the hotel for illegal immigrants until Monday, when his appeal will be heard.
Unlike the Prime Minister of Serbia, Parliament Speaker Ivica Dacic did not seem so optimistic. “I think it is difficult for Australia to comply with any request from Serbia. This is a politicization of the Djokovic case. Hundreds and thousands of people receive daily medical exemptions to visit a country. […] It is obvious that there is political involvement in the case. “We need to make it clear that this will have a negative impact on our relations with Australia,” Dacic said in an interview with Serbian Public Television (RTS). The speaker also said that Djokovic holds a Serbian diplomatic passport.
Novak Djokovic has been staying at a hotel for illegal immigrants in Melbourne since last Thursday, where he was taken after the Australian federal authorities refused to allow him to enter the country with a medical exception.
Djokovic refused to get the coronavirus vaccine and went to Australia to compete in the ‘Australian Open’ tournament after obtaining a visa under a medical exemption because he was ill. The border authorities declared his visa invalid and decided to deport him. The Serbian tennis player has appealed and the case will be heard next Monday.
