The Drangheta mafia is the dominant force in organized crime in Italy, with its operations reaching far beyond its traditional birthplace in Calabria, according to a report by Italy’s Anti-Mafia Directorate (DIA) to parliament released today to the public.

According to the report, this crime syndicate is present in almost all regions of Italy and also in many foreign countries, including Spain, France, Britain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Austria, Canada, United States, Colombia, Peru and Argentina.

The report states that Drangheta took this leadership role thanks to its cohesive structure and “military” capabilities, as well as its strong ties to South American drug cartels.

According to the same source, in recent years Drangheta has also developed logistics operations for his drug smuggling operations in West Africa, particularly in Ivory Coast, Guinea-Bissau and Ghana.

The Drangheta is one of the four major organized crime syndicates in Italy, along with Cosa Nostra in Sicily, Camorra in Campania and Sacra Corona Unita in Puglia.
