Iran: Iranian poet and regime critic Baktas Abtin dies in prison from coronavirus

by

Iranian poet and regime critic Baktas Abtin has died in prison in Tehran after being attacked there by Covid-19, human rights groups and the Iranian Writers’ Union (CNI) said today.

Abtin died today in Evin prison, CNI reported and broadcast the ILNA agency.

The poet has been in a coma since the beginning of the week, as he was seriously ill with Covid-19, CNI reported on its Instagram page.

CNN member Baktas Abtin was considered one of the harshest critics of the Iranian regime and was jailed last September on charges of spreading anti-regime propaganda. A treatment for Covid-19 was given too late, resulting in his death, according to the information.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) confirmed his death on Twitter and blamed Iranian authorities, saying they had convicted Abtin in 2019 of “propaganda against the regime” and “publishing an illegal newspaper on Facebook”.
