At least five women have been sexually harassed in Milan’s main square, the Duomo, and the surrounding area on New Year’s Eve.
According to the press, the prosecutor’s office of the Italian co-capital is conducting an investigation to identify about thirty young people (mostly foreigners, but possibly also Italians) who are responsible for the harassment.
A video posted on the internet clearly shows two German tourists being pushed by a group of young people on the railings of Duomo Square and unable to react. “We felt their hands on our bodies,” they said.
At the same time, three other Italian women, according to Italian television, have addressed the police authorities to report similar incidents.
“These are very serious incidents and we will make every effort to arrest those responsible,” said Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgeze.
The two German women emphasized that the police, who were present in the square, did not mobilize immediately to help them, but only after several minutes had passed.
Milan prosecutors, with the help of mobile video and security cameras, are now trying to locate and arrest those responsible for the harassment.
