“We want normalization and peace with Saudi Arabia. We see it as a giant leap toward ending the Arab-Israeli conflict,” Netanyahu said during a meeting in Jerusalem with Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.
“This agreement would have monumental consequences, historic consequences for Israel, for Saudi Arabia, for the region and for the world,” he added.
As of 2020, Israel has diplomatic relations with several Arab countries, including neighboring Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. But Riyadh has not recognized Israel, insisting that such action should be linked to the resolution of the Palestinian issue.
An obstacle to Netanyahu’s efforts may prove to be the deal reached last month, brokered by China, to normalize Saudi Arabia’s relations with Iran. Last Wednesday, for the first time after seven years, the Iranian embassy in Riyadh reopened.
Israel’s foreign ministry said today it has asked China to exert its influence on Tehran to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. “I spoke with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang about the danger we see in Iran’s nuclear program, a danger shared by many other countries in the region, including countries that have diplomatic relations with Iran,” the foreign minister said.
