A high-ranking Islamic State leader allegedly planning attacks in the Middle East and Europe has been killed in an operation by US forces in northern Syria, the Pentagon confirmed on Monday.

According to the statement, the target was Abd al-Hadi Mahmoud al-Hajji Ali. The operation against was organized after information came to the attention of US forces that the Islamic State was planning to kidnap officials abroad.

“Although weakened, the Islamic State remains capable of conducting operations in the region and retains the desire to carry out strikes beyond the Middle East,” said General Michael Kurila, the head of US Central Command (CENTCOM).

Two other gunmen were killed in this operation. No civilian casualties were reported.

Two weeks ago, US forces killed Khaled Aid Ahmad al-Jabouri, another IS leader who was allegedly plotting attacks in Europe and Turkey.
