The far-right prime minister of Hungary reacted rather sarcastically Viktor Orban commenting on a statement by the NATO secretary Jens Stoltenberg during his surprise visit to Ukraine on Thursday.

“Ukraine’s place is in NATO,” Stoltenberg said, with Orban reportedly asking in surprise on Twitter. “What thing);!”. The nationalist leader thus put a “freeze” on these plans with just one word. Orbán has been accused of veering towards Vladimir Putin with his policies, often causing problems in the Western bloc, such as with Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

For his part, the Minister of Defense of Germany Boris Pistorius announced Friday that an agreement had been reached to set up a base in Poland to repair German Leopard tanks deployed in Ukraine. When asked about the prospect of Ukraine joining NATO, Pistorius said that all members see Ukraine as a future member, but clarified that “everything in its time”.
