“I have told you that I intend to run. I will let you know very soon,” Joe Biden said yesterday.
US President Joe Biden is expected to officially announce on Tuesday that he will run for re-election in 2024, as many American media outlets are reporting.
Neither the White House nor the Democratic Party have confirmed the information, but the announcement of the candidacy of the 80-year-old Biden is considered almost a given.
“I have told you that I intend to run. I will let you know very soon,” Biden said today, prolonging the suspense.
Should Joe Biden finally open his papers on Tuesday, the timing will take on special symbolism: it will coincide with four years since he announced his candidacy ahead of the 2020 presidential primary (April 25, 2019). and will pave the way for a “remake” of the duel with Donald Trump.
Biden’s delay in making the official announcement has raised doubts among Democratic voters about whether the 80-year-old president would be able to serve a second four-year term. It should be noted that, if he secures a second term in the US presidency, Joe Biden will be 86 years old when he leaves the White House.
In November 2021 and February 2023, the medical tests he underwent showed that he is “in good health”. Republicans often question Biden’s mental clarity, seizing on every opportunity presented by his occasional blunders.
The current US president has statistics on his side, since in recent years most occupants of the White House have secured a second term.
Polls show that Donald Trump, considered the favorite for the Republican nomination, does not inspire Americans more than Joe Biden. As such, the Democratic president believes he can win back his Republican predecessor, who is in trouble with the Judiciary and has divided American public opinion.
It remains unknown, however, what Joe Biden’s chances would be against a much younger opponent. Among the favorites for the Republican nomination is the 44-year-old governor of Florida, Ron Desandes, who, however, has not officially announced his candidacy. Desandes began an international tour today – with stops in Japan, South Korea, Israel and Britain – in a bid to improve his foreign policy image.
