Sweden: The government is considering new measures due to the increase in coronavirus cases

by

Sweden will impose more measures to curb the growing number of coronavirus cases and the escalating pressure on the health system, Prime Minister Magdalena Anderson announced today.

“The situation has undoubtedly deteriorated. The level of infections in Sweden is at an all-time high,” she told a news conference.

The new measures include teleworking – where possible – reducing the opening hours of bars and restaurants and reducing the number of people allowed to attend public events.

The restaurants will now close at 23:00 and will be allowed to stay in the space only in seated but at tables with a maximum number of eight customers.

Adults are also encouraged to limit their social interactions indoors.

The measures will be reviewed every two weeks, but are expected to remain in force for at least a month.

While the number of new infections has risen to a new record last week, the number of people being treated with covid-19 remains much lower than the level seen in previous pandemics.

Moreover, the number of new deaths is relatively low.

More than 1,000 patients are treated with COVID and almost 100 in ICU.

The pressure on the health system is exacerbated by the spread of other respiratory infections and staff shortages, the National Health and Welfare Council said.
