A traveler was arrested a few days ago at the Boston International Airport because a sharp metal straw was found in his carry-on luggage.

Arman Achutlan Nair, 26, of Chicago, was arrested Sunday and is facing gun charges.

The so-called “Vampire Straw” looks like ordinary reusable straws. It is a hollow titanium rod – about 25cm long – with a sharp end, used primarily as a straw, but could also be turned into a lethal weapon.

“Such items are not permitted in passenger carry-on luggage,” the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said Monday.

The 26-year-old has been released on bail and is expected to appear in court in the coming days.
