The President of the European Parliament, the Italian Social Democrat David Sassoli, died during the night Monday to Tuesday in his homeland, at the age of 65, his spokesman announced.
“David Sassoli died on January 11 at 0:15 in the oncology center of Aviano, Italy, where he was hospitalized” since the end of December, announced via Twitter Roberto Cuillo, the representative of the President of the European Parliament.
“The date and place of his funeral will be announced in the coming hours,” he added.
On Monday, a spokesman for the EP president announced that David Sassoli had been admitted to hospital “due to a serious complication due to a malfunctioning immune system” and the cancellation of his official activities.
David Sassoli, who had previously been treated for leukemia, had already been hospitalized in the autumn with pneumonia, which forced him to miss the EP for several weeks.
The term of the former journalist and TV presenter in Italy, who held the presidency of the EP since 2019, was to end this month, in the middle of the five-year parliamentary term.
