On Monday, President Joe Biden invited the four House and Senate leaders to the White House next week, on May 9.

On Monday, President Joe Biden invited the four House and Senate leaders to the White House next week, on May 9.
The president plans to discuss “the initiation of a separate budget process” at that meeting, his spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, told reporters.
“We will not negotiate this issue” with the Republicans, he stressed.
“The debt limit has been raised three times during Donald Trump’s presidency. It shouldn’t be any different now,” he recalled.
Biden sees raising the debt limit as a “constitutional obligation” of Congress, which shouldn’t even be debating the issue.
Republicans, however, led by Kevin McCarthy, the speaker of the House of Representatives, are calling for drastic cuts in public spending to increase the government’s borrowing limit.
