Blackened steel, copper and bronze columns add verticality to the building’s height, jutting from its flat roof towards the sky
Brooklyn, New York reached new heights as the neo-deco top of the supertall skyscraper Brooklyn Towerby SHoP Architects, has been completed.
With its 93 floors, the tower, realized by JDS Development, has already become a landmark for the district. With its mix of residential and commercial spaces it is on its way to redefining how New Yorkers live and work.
SHoP Architects’ skyscraper honors the historic Dime Savings Bank with a contemporary yet iconic expression of its Art Deco heritage: combining baroque and contemporary details, the top of the building is both “truly impressive and extremely playful”. Blackened steel, copper and bronze columns add verticality to the building’s height, jutting from its flat roof towards the sky.
The installation of the curved-concave marble columns was completed this spring. The columns were designed to provide visual continuity with the historic bank which is at street level. With a convex shape at the base and an inverted concave shape at the top. Adding a touch of luxury to the pillars, thin gold-toned metallic lines adorn their edges as ‘lining’.
