A forest fire raging out of control in the Sverdlovsk region of the Ural Mountains forced the authorities to order the evacuation of a village on Saturday when the flames approached a powder warehouse.

There were no reports of casualties in the community of Pervomaiski, which was evacuated before the powder warehouse caught fire. Local authorities have warned residents of neighboring villages to be on the lookout for the possibility of having to leave their homes urgently.

Governor Yevgeny Kuvasev called the situation “critical” with the fire fronts in Sverdlovsk, which have spread over an area of 200,000 hectares.

Last week, one person was killed and hundreds left homeless by a fire that burned the houses of another village in the same area.
