At least 20 people died when a boat carrying tourists, including many children, capsized in the state of Kerala (southeast India) on Sunday, according to authorities and media reports.

“I am saddened by the loss of life due to the sea accident at Malappuram in Kerala. Condolences to the families of the deceased,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter, promising compensation to the next of kin of the victims.
The accident took place in Thanur, a coastal town in Malappuram district, Kerala. The rescue operation is still ongoing.
Most of the victims were children on vacation from school, said V. Abdurahiman, sports minister in Kerala state, who coordinated the rescue operations. There were over thirty people on board when it capsized.
Four people, one in critical condition, were taken to a hospital, Mr Abdurahiman told PTI.
Survivors told Indian media that many passengers were not wearing life jackets.
The reason why the vessel overturned remains unknown at this time.
