Rita Lee, the so-called “Queen of Rock” in Brazil, emblematic of the Tropicalia movement in the 1960s, has died at the age of 75.

Two years ago he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Her family announced via Instagram that Rita Lee breathed her last on Monday night, at her home in Sao Paulo, surrounded by loved ones, as she always wanted.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called her a “pioneer” and “one of the greatest and brightest stars of Brazilian music”.

Rita Lee Jones de Carvalho was born on December 31, 1947 in Sao Paulo. Her father was an American-Brazilian dentist and her mother was a Brazilian pianist of Italian descent.

She began her career in the early 1960s performing Beatles covers, but rose to fame with the rock band Os Mutantes at the height of the Tropicalia psychedelic rock movement that emerged during the Brazilian dictatorship years (1964-1985).

After 1972 Rita Lee pursued a solo career and her hits “Ovelha Negra” (1975), “Mania de você” (1979), “Lança Perfume” (1980) and “Amor e sexo” (2003) stood out.

She retired in 2012, aged 64, and has since lived in seclusion with her husband, Roberto de Carvalho, with whom she has three children.
