Is the Prime Minister’s divorce a private matter? “It’s not,” replies a Finnish columnist
After the announcement on Wednesday by the prime minister Sana Marin and her husband, Markus Raikkonen, that they will separate, the media has been filled with reports on the matter and speculation about Marin’s past and future.
The political editor of the site Iltalehti Marko Oscar Lehtonencomments that Marin and Raikkonen’s divorce did not come as much of a surprise to those listening to the rumors circulating in political circles recently.
Separation, he says, was considered broadly speaking “certain”. Is the Prime Minister’s divorce a private matter? “Is not”, Lehtonen replies.
He points out that the prime minister is the most influential person in the country, whose every move is watched, and his every word or omission is viewed with a magnifying glass. “The prime minister is the biggest authority in Finland, and any matter that may affect her ability to carry out her duties is inevitably the subject of public evaluation and interest,” he notes in the wake of the “scandal” with the 37-year-old’s wild party.
“If the prime minister’s husband, who was by his wife’s side in the past, is suddenly not there, that raises questions.”
Marin and Raikkonen’s wedding at the Prime Minister’s official residence, Kesäranta, was a major news story in 2020. “Why wouldn’t it be the couple’s divorce three years later?’ asks the Finnish ethnographer.
It is noted that the Prime Minister of Finland and her peer former soccer player have been together for 19 years and have a daughter, Emma Amalia Marin.
The news of her marriage was shared by the Prime Minister herself on Instagram, with a photo of them and a touching caption that read: “Yesterday we said yes to each other. I am happy and grateful to share my life with the man I love. Together we have seen and experienced a lot, we have shared joys and sorrows and we have supported each other through difficulties and storms. We lived our youth together, grew to adulthood and grew up together with our beloved daughter. Of all people, you are the one for me. Thank you for being by my side.”
