The Russian president Vladimir Putin said today that Moscow has never refused a “diplomatic route” to resolving the conflict in Ukraine in a telephone conversation with his South African counterpart, the Kremlin said.

Putin said he supported the South African president’s proposal Cyril RamaphosaAfrican leaders to participate in peace talks on Ukraine, according to the announcement of Kremlin.

South Africa has maintained a neutral stance in the war, now in its 15th month. Officials today hit back at US accusations that a sanctioned Russian merchant ship was carrying weapons from the Simons Town naval base near Cape Town late last year.

The US ambassador to South Africa said on Thursday that he was certain a Russian ship had loaded weapons from the Simons Town naval base in December, suggesting the incident was inconsistent with Pretoria’s declared neutrality in the Ukraine conflict

Ramaphosa said he had launched an investigation into the allegation.

During their talks, Putin also repeated the proposal to send Russian grain and fertilizers for free in African countries.
