“The (EU) member states have decided unanimously to support Antonio Vittorino’s candidacy,” Borrell said at the end of a council of foreign ministers in Stockholm
The European Union supports the director general of the UN migration agency, the Portuguese Antonio Vitorino, who is running for a second term against an American candidate, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, announced today.
Elections for the leadership of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), scheduled for next week, pit the 66-year-old Vitorino against his deputy, American Amy Pope, who is backed by US President Joe Biden.
“The (EU) member states have decided unanimously to support the candidacy of Antonio Vittorino,” Borrell said at the end of a council of foreign ministers in Stockholm.
The Portuguese politician and lawyer beat the American candidate in his election to the leadership of the IOM in 2018, becoming the second non-American to head the 175-member body whose Europeans and Americans are the main donors.
Vitorino was EU Commissioner for Justice and Home Affairs (1999-2004) and Portugal’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense (1995 to 1997) during the Prime Ministership of António Guterres – the current UN Secretary-General.
