Responding to a question from Greek correspondents in Washington, a representative of the US State Department asked to ensure the validity of the elections, calling on all sides to comply with the laws and rules.
“We call on the (Albanian) authorities to enforce all laws and regulations fairly and equitably,” the State Department said on the arrest of Heimarra mayoral candidate Freddy Beleri in Albania.

In particular, the State Department spokesman said: “We have repeatedly called on the authorities and political parties to ensure that voters can exercise their fundamental democratic right to express their will through free and fair elections. It is important for everyone to comply with the laws and rules governing elections, as well as international rules, including the ban on buying or selling votes. We call on the authorities to enforce all laws and regulations fairly and equally. U.S. Embassy officials are participating with other international institutions to monitor elections across the country.”
