Farmers in Serbia continue their protests for a second day by blocking country roads with tractors.
Farmers are demanding better prices for the products they produce and an increase in subsidies.
During the meeting they had last Monday with Prime Minister Ana Mrnabic, no agreement was reached after the government rejected all requests asking them to “be patient”.
The farmers are demanding a subsidy of 300 euros per hectare (ten acres) of arable land, an exemption from the special tax on diesel, setting a minimum purchase price for milk at 75 dinars per kilo (0.65 euros) and greater subsidies to livestock.
The agricultural unions complain that all the increases in subsidies given in the last two years are being reaped by big traders and industries. They typically report that in milk, every time the subsidy was increased, the dairy companies reduced the purchase price while at the same time the retail price of milk in the supermarkets increased.
The farmers say they are determined to intensify their action. “From today, May 17, the tractors will also go out on national roads,” said the president of the Subotica Agricultural Union, where the protests started.
