The Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr Antonio Guterreshailed on Wednesday the two-month extension of the deal allowing Ukrainian grain exports through the Black Sea, which is critical to global food supplies.

“I welcome this decision. The extension is good news for the world,” Mr. Guterres told the press, noting, however, that he had hopes that the agreement would be extended for a longer period.

“There are outstanding issues,” the UN chief noted. However, “I hope we can reach a comprehensive agreement to improve, expand and extend the agreement, as I suggested in my recent letter to the presidents” of Turkey, Russia and Ukraine, he continued.

“These agreements are important for global food security,” he insisted, stressing that after the so-called Black Sea Grains Initiative came into force in July 2022, “more than 30 million tons” of agricultural products were exported.

In addition, the agreement shows that “even in the darkest hours, there is always a ray of hope”, as it gives “the opportunity to find solutions that benefit everyone”, underlined Mr. Guterres.

Earlier yesterday, Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the extension of the agreement for sixty days.
