On Wednesday, Petro announced via Twitter that the children, aged 13, 9 and 4, and an 11-month-old infant had been found, which he said was not confirmed.
THE president of Colombia Gustavo Petro denied today, with a post on Twitter, that they were found live in the Amazon jungle four missing children after the crash of the single-engine aircraft they were on.
The investigations are continuing, he clarified.
“I decided to delete the post because the information we received (…) was not confirmed. I’m sorry for what happened”he wrote, adding that “Military forces and indigenous communities will continue investigations without interruption.” On Wednesday, Petro announced via Twitter that the children, ages 13, 9 and 4, and an 11-month-old infant had been found.
The Cessna 206 single-engine aircraft disappeared from radar on May 1, near San Jose del Gaviare, where he was to land. Its wreckage was found on Monday in the dense jungle. Authorities based their hopes that at least some of those on board would be found alive on the fact that they found various personal items, bitten fruit and a baby bottle in the jungle. There was also a “makeshift shelter, made of sticks and branches.”
The jungle is very dense and dangerous in this isolated area, and searches are made particularly difficult by wild animals, trees reaching heights of up to 40 meters and heavy rainfall. More than 100 soldiers, indigenous people from local communities and specially trained sniffer dogs are involved in the search.
The cause of the Cessna crash has not yet been determined. The civil aviation authority said the pilot reported experiencing engine problems shortly before the aircraft disappeared from radar.
