The Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov argued on Saturday that the decisions taken by the Group of Seven countries at the summit in Japan are aimed at the “double containment” of Russia and China.

Addressing a conference call, Lavrov repeated Russia’s claim that “the West is using Ukraine as a tool to achieve a strategic defeat of Moscow”.

The US and its allies reject that narrative, saying they are helping Kiev defend itself against an illegal war.

“The issue has been raised loud and clear — to defeat Russia on the battlefield, but not stop there and eliminate it as a geopolitical competitor. Look at the decisions being discussed and adopted today at the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima and the which they target on the double containment of Russia and China”, Lavrov said.

In their announcement, G7 leaders agreed to tighten sanctions against Moscow and reduce their exposure to China. They also called on China to pressure Russia to immediately end its military operation and withdraw its forces from Ukraine.

According to Lavrov, the West is pressuring the two countries to limit trade and economic ties with Russia, but Moscow has the support other allies.
