The first case of the current cholera epidemic was announced in February – the virus was transferred from Malawi
The address of the Ministry of Health in the Hauteng Province of South Africa announced on Sunday that 19 more cases of cholera had been confirmed in the Hamanskral community, ten of which were fatal.
The first case of the current cholera outbreak was announced in February; the virus arrived in the country from Malawi.
It is not clear how many cases of the highly contagious disease have been recorded nationally. However, the province of Hauteng, the country’s most populous, where Johannesburg and the capital Pretoria are administratively under, is the hardest hit.
South Africa’s most recent cholera outbreak was in 2008-2009, when about 12,000 cases were confirmed; the virus was brought into the country from neighboring Zimbabwe.
The disease caused by the cholera bacterium after a short incubation period of two to five days causes extremely acute diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration and – if not treated immediately – death within a few hours. It is extremely dangerous for small children.
