The head of Russia’s national security council, Nikolai Patrushev, will hold talks later in the day with Chen Wenxing, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China’s Central Committee in charge of police, legal and intelligence-gathering issues. , the Russian state news agency RIA reported.

This is the first meeting of Mr. Patrushev and Chen, RIA explained. The Chinese official was named secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission in October, which is China’s top security post.

Mr Patrushev, the former head of Russia’s internal security service (FSB), is widely regarded as one of the toughest hawks in President Vladimir Putin’s inner circle.

Bilateral talks on security issues are held every year. However, the Reuters news agency points out that the two countries strengthened their relations at the economic, political and military levels after the Russian military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
