The Bolivian authorities proceeded to confiscate 9.2 tons of coca leaves originating in Peru, the interior minister announced yesterday Monday.

A total of 795 packages or parcels were found by police in the truck trailer during a check on a road in the Andes, Interior Minister Eduardo del Castillo explained, clarifying that this is one of the largest seizures of this nature.

The operation was carried out in the middle of last week but was not officially announced until yesterday.

According to Minister Del Castillo, the coca leaves were intended for the production of drugs and their illegal trafficking in Bolivian territory.

Bolivian authorities have repeatedly pointed out that the country is part of Peruvian cocaine trafficking routes to Brazil and other countries, but the seizure of such a large quantity of coca leaves originating in Peru is unusual.

According to the Peruvian National Commission for Drug-Free Development and Life, coca cultivation in Peru reached an area of 803,810 hectares in 2021. About 10% of the amount produced was used for legal purposes (chewing, infusions, extracts).

According to UN figures, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia are the three countries with the largest production of coca leaf and cocaine hydrochloride in the world.
