The driver of a truck whose rental vehicle crashed into guardrails near the White House is facing multiple criminal charges, police said today, following an overnight incident that authorities say may have been intentional.

The suspect is charged with, among other things, threatening to kill, kidnap or harm the president, vice president or a family member, US Park Police said in a statement. He did not name the adult charged.

The US Secret Service said it had arrested the man after the vehicle crashed yesterday Monday in the evening local time, but that there was no danger in progress and that there were no injuries.

A Reuters witness said investigators found a Nazi swastika flag inside the truck, which crashed into bars in Washington’s Lafayette Square, a few dozen meters from the White House.

“Preliminary investigation data indicate that the driver may have intentionally crashed into the safety bars at Lafayette Square”Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said on Twitter.

The suspect also faces charges of assault with a dangerous weapon, trespassing, destruction of federal property and reckless operation of a vehicle, Park Police said.

Television station WUSA aired video showing officers approaching a U-Haul truck. A remote-controlled robot opened the back door, revealing a wheeled cargo cart, but no apparent cargo.

Chris Zabozzi, a pilot who lives in Washington and was an eyewitness, posted a short video on social media that Reuters later confirmed showed the truck crashing into the barriers while walking home.

“I looked back and saw that the U-Haul van had crashed into the bar.”said Zabozzi, who added that he drove away after the truck hit the bars a second time.

It is unclear exactly where President Joe Biden was at the time the truck hit the bars just before 10:00 p.m. (05:00 today Greek time). Earlier on Monday afternoon he had met with the speaker of the US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy at the White House.
