London, Thanasis Gavos

Dozens of Portuguese police officers with specially trained dogs are continuing their search for a second day in the area of the Arante dam, as part of the effort to find out the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

On Tuesday the search was focused on the banks of the artificial lake that has been formed in the area of the dam, at a distance of 30 kilometers from the resort of Praia da Luz, where the then four-year-old British girl went missing in May 2007.

Police were carrying bags of unknown contents into vehicles on Tuesday afternoon, having searched the area that the main suspect in the case, Christian Brickner, who has been incarcerated in another case in a German prison, has described as “paradise”.

And according to information transmitted by some British media, the new investigations are focused on the possible detection of pink fabric, from the pink pajamas the girl was wearing on the night of her disappearance.

These are the first large-scale investigations into the case in nine years.

It remains unknown whether divers will eventually be used to search the bottom of the artificial lake, something that was done again in 2008 but without result.

Brickner denies any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance, but evidence places him in Praia da Luz on the fateful night. According to a Reuters source, the investigations were requested by German authorities after they found at least one photograph of the area in Brickner’s belongings.
