Whitehall, the main thoroughfare of Westminster in London, has reopened to traffic after a police presence following a car crash into Downing Street’s main security gate.
Video from local security cameras shows the silver vehicle heading in a straight line but at a very low speed onto the black metal gate.
Pictures show the driver being led away by officers, with the Metropolitan Police confirming he has been arrested on charges of causing criminal damage and dangerous driving. Eyewitnesses said the arrested, a middle-aged white man, did not put up any resistance.
The incident happened at 4.20pm local time and the area was reopened to the public an hour and a half later after officers searched the vehicle.
According to information, the counter-terrorism agency is not involved in the investigations.
It is noted that in the straight line from Downing Street from which the vehicle appeared is an organized parking area used by workers in the nearby Ministry of Defense as well as some of the many other government agencies in the area.
No injuries resulted from the incident.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was inside Number 10 Downing Street at the time of the incident, although he left shortly after through the back exit for a scheduled visit.
