Jessica Watkins was found guilty last November by a Washington federal court of obstructing official proceedings, conspiracy and obstructing police officers during the riots.
Jessica Watkins, member of the far-right organization Oath Keepers, was sentenced today to 8.5 years in prison for her role in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, by supporters of former President Donald Trump who were trying to overturn the outcome of the presidential election.
Watkins was found guilty last November in a Washington federal court of obstructing official proceedings, conspiracy and obstructing police officers during the riots.
Judge Emit Meta said today that it was “particularly difficult” to sentence Watkins after she testified about her struggle with being transgender and because she cooperated with authorities investigating the events of January 6. But all that “doesn’t erase” what he did that day, he explained.
Federal prosecutors were asking for Watkins to be sentenced to 18 years in prison. She, sobbing, asked Meta to issue a “fair decision”. “My actions and behavior on that fateful day were wrong and, as I now understand, criminal.” he said.
Later today Metta will announce the sentencing of another member of the organization, Kenneth Harrelson, who was also found guilty of conspiring to prevent Congress from ratifying Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential victory.
